Her sister, my sweet 8 year old daughter, breathes deeply right next to me. After […]

Let’s Go Beyond the “New Normal”

I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer 8 years ago, with a newborn baby, and after years of (mostly) healthy living. I felt betrayed by my body. My fantasy about the first year of my daughter’s life and what kind of mother I’d be was shattered. After the end of active treatment, it wasn’t […]

Talk to Me – Yoga Journal Article

Both yoga and psychotherapy aim to foster a sense of self-awareness. While traditional psychotherapy often involves talking about a problem to achieve a change in the emotional state, therapists who incorporate yoga often look to change the physical state first so that the client has more resources from which to draw.

Mantra Practice in the Kundalini Yoga Tradition

A focused, calm mind is a true friend, while an anxious, jumpy or brooding mind causes us much trouble.  Can you think of a time when your mind was at peace or in deep concentration?  Once, when scuba diving, I hovered for many minutes above a giant manta ray in the Pacific Ocean.  I felt […]

Parenting with an Open Heart

Posted on | | by Anita

“Open your heart before you open your mouth.” This is what my meditation teacher says to me when I ask how I can be a better mother. He is referring to a particular meditation practice that involves bringing awareness and breath to the heart center. He is also referring to the understanding that by accessing the energy of the heart, we cultivate more compassion and lovingkindness towards ourselves and others. When we lead from the heart in relationship to others, we are more likely to foster understanding, closeness, and connection. By focusing on the qualities of the heart, we attune to our highest selves.

“Yoga and Talk™” is a therapy group for middle school and high school girls that combines yoga with a more traditional group therapy approach. The idea for “Yoga and Talk” came out of our personal experiences and professional training in both yoga and psychotherapy. In coming together to discuss our experiences with each other, we discovered several exciting similarities in our personal processes. Both on the yoga mat and in the psychotherapy patient chair, we had experienced the profound gifts of being both safely held and soothed (equanimity) and gaining greater insight (awareness).
